.: Email Account Set-up

All Calders web accounts (also called hosting accounts) come with free, and generally a potentially unlimited number of email accounts. Before we get into the nitty gritty of the set-up, it's important to know some general principles of how your email accounts work in order to make the most of them and to avoid problems.

.: Email accounts are part of your overall Web Account

Your web account is made up of:

1. The files that make up your web site - the web pages, pictures, etc.
2. Various server configuration files such as your site statistics
3. Empty space - usually left for your email accounts. In a typical 10 MB web account this leaves 5 - 8 MB available for ALL email.

.: The Mail Server and your messages

When someone sends you an email it is stored in what ever room is left available in your web account. When you check your email in a programme such as Outlook a copy of this message is downloaded to your computer. Unless you configure things otherwise there are now two copies of the email - the original on the server and the copy on your computer. Even though your computer has tons of space, your web account only has a comparably tiny amount of room. If those emails are left to pile up in your web account you will eventually have difficulties such as not being able to receive new mail. The following set-up instructions show how to avoid this problem.

.: Making the most of your web & email accounts

In addition to using these instructions to maximize the efficiency of your set-up, you should also consider getting a larger web account if you need lots of email accounts or will be regularly transferring large attachements (digital photos, graphics files, powerpoint presentations, PDFs, etc.). In most cases larger web accounts are only a few dollars more per month for double the space.

.: Outlook (Express) Set-up Instructions

• Setting up an all new account - for those who are new to having an email account attached to a domain name that they own (e.g. me@mysite.co.nz as opposed to me@xtra.co.nz) or who are adding another new email address to their domain.
• Adjusting existing account details - mainly for those who already have a site and email accounts and have just switched to Calders hosting.
